Recently, the beauty industry has created awesome products to not only help us feel and look amazing for our skin, but also inform and empower us with knowledge and transparency of their branding. With so many new products coming out recently, we sometimes wonder: well… it’s good that these brands are becoming popular, but what are actually worth investing over?
We rounded up 5 top skincare products of 2018 that claim to help with acne, breakouts, smooth texture and overall clear skin, and put them to the ultimate test to see if they are actually worth spending your pennies over.
What it is: Summer Fridays was started by beauty super influencer Marianna Hewitt and her business partner Lauren Gores as a brand catered to self-care in the form of masks. Their products are carefully created with the idea of offering affordable, clean, and effective facials at the comfort of home, while being simultaneously complimenting other skincare products.
Top product from the brand:
Why it’s good: The Jet Lag mask was inspired by the bouts of jet lag Hewitt and Gores experienced during their frequent travels. They noticed that the constant travel constantly left their skin parched, dry, rough, dull, and stressed and wanted to create a product that can hydrate and deeply nourish the lost moisture from their skin. The mask has vitamins C, E, and arginine (a naturally occurring amino acid that plumps the skin) to help replenish the skin and give it a smoother texture. Felicia and Rowena especially love to use the Jet Lag mask whenever their skin feels congested or in need of hydration.
What it is: With the motto “Press, Reset, and Feed your skin what it craves”, Krave Beauty is all about transparency with their audience. It believes that the extensive, multi-step skin care products you use shouldn’t be a necessity to maintaining your skin’s health, contrary to popular belief. Instead, the brand crafts products essential to your skin, all while preventing further skin damage and restoring its natural glow.
Top products from the brand:
Why it’s good: Not only are they products created with all natural ingredients, but they are also very gentle on the skin. The Matcha Hemp Cleanser is super gentle on the skin while The Beet Shield has SPF of 50+++ and is rich in antioxidants to help fight off free radicals from the skin’s surface. Both Fel and Rowena loovee Krave Beauty products since they’re super gentle on the skin and work great for both oily-combination and dry-sensitive skin types.
What it is: Thayers is a brand that first started in 1847 by Henry Thayers, who created a line of herbal extracts and elixirs with Witch Hazel as a core ingredient. Witch Hazel is a plant that contains tannins, which are natural occurring substances from the bark and skin of plants, and are known to have antioxidant properties, balance the skin’s pH, and reduce irritation on the skin. Thayers is particularly known for their witch hazel astringents, which not only help reduce excess sebum for oily skin but is also considered a great acne remedy.
Top Products from the brand:
Why it’s good: Thayers is alcohol-free, which makes a great toner and astringent for those with congested skin. Since Witch Hazel being a key ingredient in this product, the toners and astringents from this line help to soothe and calm inflammation, and control excess oils on the skin. Fel finds the Thayers products decent for her skin...after she learned (the hard way) to apply the toner using a soaked cotton pad.
What it is: Drunk Elephant is a simple and clean line with Marula oil used as a key ingredient. The Marula oil is harvested from the Marula fruit from Africa, which also comes from the same family as mangoes. Fun fact: there’s a myth in Africa that talks about elephants getting drunk from eating fermented Marula fruit off the ground...sounds familiar?
Top products from the brand:
Why it’s good: While many products of this line are worth using, the Beste No.9 Jelly cleanser is recommended for deep cleansing the face without being harsh and stripping your skin of its natural oils. It has a jelly texture that froths slightly when mixed with water, and leaves your face feeling super clean. For Fel, this cleanser is incredibly gentle for her skin and she loves the fact that it deep cleanses without making her face feel dry.
The T.L.C Framboos Glycolic Night Serum is highly recommended by Rowena and Felicia for those who are just getting into chemical exfoliants. As per written on the packaging, this product contains a blend of AHA and BHA acids such as glycolic, lactic, tartaric, citric, and salicylic acid to help decongest your skin and encourage the resurfacing of new skin cells by removing the layer of dead skin cells away.
What it is: Glow Recipe is created by Christine Chang and Sarah Lee as a brand and platform dedicated to accessible and natural k-beauty products while sharing all the latest and up-to-date skincare trends, tips, and knowledge. Glow Recipe aspires to take natural beauty ingredients used in Ancient Korea and combine it with today’s modern skincare technologies to create the best products for plumping and hydrating the skin.
Top products from the brand:
Why it’s good: The watermelon line products feature watermelon extract as a key ingredient to help hydrate and soothe irritated skin, as well as delivering essential vitamins and minerals to help fight free radicals. The Watermelon Sleeping Mask contains AHA as well as peony root, which is good for brightening and soothing the skin. The Watermelon Pink Juice moisturizer also contains peony root extract and watermelon extract but it also contains hyaluronic acid to help seal in hydration and plump the skin. Rowena really enjoys using Glow Recipe during the summer months to hydrate her skin and look glowy.
